Berry Grunt
Various food dictionaries define grunt as “an old-fashioned dessert of berries with a dough topping,” and that’s just what we have here. It is quick, easy, and delicious, so why not give this old-fashioned dessert a try.
  • 3cups fresh strawberriesblueberries, or raspberries (or combination), or frozen berries, thawed and drained, 750 ml
  • 1cup water250 ml
  • 2/3cup sugar160 ml
  • 1tsp grated lemon rind5 ml
  • 1 1/2cups all-purpose flour375 ml
  • 1 1/2tsp baking powder7 ml
  • 1/4tsp salt1 ml
  • A grating of fresh nutmeg
  • 2/3cup buttermilk160 ml
  1. Combine the berries, water, sugar, and lemon rind in a saucepan over moderate heat and cook for 5 minutes, stirring often.
  2. Meanwhile, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg in a mixing bowl.
  3. Stir in the buttermilk; do not over mix.
  4. Drop the batter over the berries, making 8 dumplings.
  5. Cover and simmer for 8 to 10 minutes.
  6. Serves 8.
